Port Commissioners Vote Against New Stadium Site
A new football stadium will not be built on the site of the Tenth
Avenue Marine Terminal. The Board of Port Commissioners voted
Tuesday against funding a feasibility study for a new stadium
for the San Diego Chargers at the downtown location. Residents
expressed their opinions on the 96-acre site during a public
hearing Tuesday. The site is home to the San Diego offices of
Dole Fresh Fruit Company, which contributes $73 million in revenue
to the region and 750 jobs.
On the offensive: Waging war against West Nile
Alabama has its first human case of the West Nile virus and the
bite hits close to home.
The victim is in his eighties and lives in Toulminville. Right
now, he's recovering at home.
Health officials say the elderly are most susceptible because
their immune systems are weaker.
So what's being done to wage war on the West Nile virus in our
area?

Department sprays up to a dozen different routes nightly, trying
to curb the mosquito population which has been on the rise due
to June's heavy rains.

Venita Smith is on a mission to help save her brother, David Smith.
David has a disease that causes his body to reject his liver.
"His legs were swollen three or four times the size they
should be and had fluid seeping out of them from standing," Venita
says.
The disease is hereditary. Their mother died from the same disease.
Now, David needs a transplant. However, his insurance won't cover
it and he can't afford it.

Nothing Down Home Buying
In this difficult economy where stock valuations are questionable,
one of the best investments is a real estate. But for many potential
buyers, a down payment keeps them from considering this all-important
purchase. This should not be the case. It is possible to buy a
home with nothing down-meaning no down payment.
The method of purchasing a home with no down payment that most
people are familiar with is through the Veterans Administration
or VA. This benefit is available to active and retired members
of the military service, veterans, POW's and MIA's and their unmarried
widows. All branches of the service are included including the
Coast Guard.

American Legion Baseball
Changes in effect for '05
For the past seven years, American Legion Baseball players in
Rapid City had the choice to play for either Post 22 or Post 320.
But starting next year, the choice will no longer be theirs.
NewsCenter1 has learned that Post 320, Post 22, and the South Dakota Legion
office, is in the final stages of adopting a rule that would assign all Rapid
City Central baseball players to Post 320 and all Rapid City Stevens players
to Post 22.
This past February, during a meeting with American Legion Baseball Director
Jim Quinlan, representatives from Post 22 and Post 320 were informed that their
recruitment practices in Rapid City were against legion baseball rules. Since
Post 320's inception in 1998, Rapid City's two legion teams allowed the players
from Stevens, Central, Douglas, St Thomas More, and Christian to decide which
program to join; but that practice is contrary to legion rules which state
that all teams must have a base school to ensure a proper recruiting foundation.
Red Barons beat Bats
Lou Collier went 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple and three RBI
to lead the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons to a 6-5 victory over
the Louisville Bats on Friday.
Collier hit his ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot
off of Brandon Claussen, in the bottom of the first. Mark Smith
added an RBI single in the inning to give the Barons an early
3-0 lead.
Pfizer has a new plan to help uninsured Americans
There is good news for 950,000 low-income Michigan residents,
as pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has announced a program to help
them save money on prescription medication.
The announcement was made Wednesday in Lansing by Pfizer officials
and state leaders, and comes on the heels of accusations that pharmaceutical
companies increased prices before the Medicare discount card went
into effect.
"This is genuinely a program that will cost Pfizer money," says
Pfizer Vice President David Canter. "It's a program that I think
is the right thing to do."
